Recycled Rubber User Guide

Glossary of Terms and Acronyms Page 22 | 27 Styrene-butadiene Rubber (SBR) SBR describe families of synthetic rubbers derived from styrene and butadiene used in tires, conveyor belts, seals, gaskets and an extensive range of applications. Surface Morphology Surface morphology research refers to the unit mass or unit volume and may highlight the difference between “ambient” and cryogenic products, respectively deriving from mechanical milling operations at ambient temperature and from impact-type fragmentation at low temperature. Several physical properties have experimented with addressing certain properties which are mentioned in ASTM D6114 (maximum particle size and specific gravity) which may lead to an overestimate of surface area depending upon specific rubber properties. Sustainability Sustainability is the ability to maintain or support a process over time. Sustainability is often broken into three core concepts: economic, environmental, and social. Many businesses and governments have committed to sustainable goals, such as reducing their environmental footprints and conserving resources. The intent is to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. T Take – Off Tire A tire which has been removed from a vehicle and retained for reuse or recycling by qualified tire processors. Tipping Fee A fee charged by the operator of a tire processing, recycling, energy recovery, or disposal facility to accept scrap tires – either whole or shredded – delivered to these locations. Tire and Rim Association (TRA) Industrial association of tire, rim and valve manufacturers. The purposes of TRA include the establishment and promulgation of interchangeability standards for tires, rims, and allied parts for the guidance of manufacturers of such products, designers and manufacturers of motor vehicles, aircraft and other wheeled vehicles and equipment, and governmental and other regulatory bodies. Tire Industry Association (TIA) TIA was created out of the merger between TANA and ITRA. This group represents all sectors of the North American replacement tire market and provides technical assistance and training to the tire and transportation industries in all areas relating to tires and wheels, including tire service, retreading, repairing, and rubber recycling.
